Completing my Internship With Dr. Michele Kekeh in the Global health Department of health sciences at Old dominion University. The Global health department seeks to research and provide populations with health disparities with support and programs to improve health in order to sequentially improve socioeconomic, economic, community health. Dr. kekeh is the provider of this internship , and she is the clinical assistant professor and she is in global health department and is conducting research studies on health deprived populations. Below is my Resume
At my new Internship work, I am currently meeting with the professor at the global health office for the data entry portion for a wellness program assessment with Suffolk public schools, and to make sure we keep confidential information private; I earned a certification at the beginning with “CITI PROGRAM” for research conduct and ethics for the study. My interactions with them consist of 3 days a week and I have a small team, my coordinator and a peer who is pursuing her doctor’s degree but currently has a master’s in human resources and social work. The organization and work process has been all technical at the beginning while doing data entry and reviewing questions mailed by our research cohorts. We create data sets, and make sure our data is coded correctly in SPSS, so it is accurate and then we exported charts and statistics to use for evaluation for the wellness program stakeholders. My duties with data analysis were interesting I was able to provide support with data analysis. I also had to find primary research sources of wellness programs to support our writing intention and mission. Throughout the first 100 hours of my intern, I learned the process to conduct a Research study on human individuals. I gained experience in SPSS which is a software much known in epidemiology and community healthcare data analysis. Within my first 100 hours of this internship, I had learned a lot about IRB and compliance with them when conducting research. I also had to manage the data usage and how we used the cohort’s private information; I kept up with methods to keep information confidential. I had gained some basic coding experience as well
During my last 100 hours of my internship i did some more interesting research. I started doing some writing on wellness programs and synchronizing with databases sources and other research interventions to support the organization wellness program mission for improving health of school staff. I then started the next the project for grandparents raising grandchildren and their health disparities. This assignment consisted of interviews done by a peer who read the informed consent form to the participant and awarded them with a $50 gift card; My duty was to transcribe the text and make sure the literature matched what was said in the conversation. I listened how my peer spoke to the participants and asked questions to gather information about the caregivers’ circumstances taking care of their grandchildren. I had to get familiar with the resources spoken about like TANF and SNAP as this was mentioned to a lot of grandparents. I then did annotated bibliographies and found resources for grandparents raising children during covid-19 and the effects the pandemic had on their physical health. The knowledge I gained during this last 100 hours was about how to speak to participants of a research study and how to provide them incentives for participating. I also learned how grandparents’ financial hardships and about the populations that are likely to have grandparents as primary caregivers. Also learned about the effects of being raised by grandparents in most circumstances where parents were incarcerated, on drugs, or just not able to take care of the child. Completing my final hours of the internship was interesting because I completed my goals that I had set for myself. However, I would like to continue to learn coding and become more competent with data analysis.
