Based on the on current information provided regarding cybersecurity policies, There definitely are a few ethical concerns. The main ethical concern is focused around the protection of digital DNA. A majority of people have the initial trust that these companies are taking the proper precautions in protecting their literal identity. Especially being that a lot of these companies have been around since the late 90’s. However, the average person isn’t necessarily taking into account how much technology has advanced since then; how easy it is for that type of sensitive data to be stolen and taken advantage of. Having your DNA stole is probably way worse than just having your social security card stolen. With your social security card yes it’s your identity, but it’s also something that can be replaced. Your DNA however, cannot. Yes the likelihood of someone stealing your DNA from a site like ancestry.com and framing you for a crime is slim. However, those odds are currently increasing day by day. Furthermore, digital technology definitely has its pros as well pertaining to the solved cold cases, and helping people learn of their lineage; but I feel like until we develop stronger preventative measures, it’s something that we shouldn’t necessarily dabble in for personal reasons, only legal or criminal.
