Module 8 Discussion 1.2

I was unable to go to the ODU Lit Fest last week because ODU is a few hours away from where I live, and I didn’t have the time to drive all the way there. Since I did not go to the festival, I will be following the instructions for Module 8 Discussion 8. The first poem I read was Tim Seibles poem Trying for Fire. The poem is about how awful life is in the city, and that people in the past thought things would get better, but they never do. The second poem I read was written by the poet Natalie Diaz titled The Last Mojave Indian Barbie, which was about many stereotypes that white people often associate with being Native American.

The poet Natalie Diaz was born on a reservation in Needles, California and her works have been showcased in many magazines & papers. Natalie Diaz has written other poems besides The Last Mojave Indian Barbie, many of which are about her brother. her first book of poetry is titled When My Brother Was an Aztec, and it is about her trying to get through a dinner with him that ends terribly. One of the main focuses of her poems about her brother is his addiction to crystal meth, which has put a strain on her family’s life.
