Module 9 Discussion 1.2
The narrator of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is an older man that is afraid of his imminent demise, but while most of the poem focuses on his anxiety about death, he also displays anxiety about being attractive to women. None of the women described in the poem have any description of their faces, almost as if he can’t look at them. While baldness is an effect of old age, it is also usually considered unattractive, so when the narrator mentions his bald spot repeatedly it could refer to his fear of death or his fear of being unattractive. There are numerous references to Michelangelo, an artist who mostly depicted young men. One references to Michelangelo is when the narrator says that the women at the table were ‘speaking of Michelangelo’ which could be a reference to the narrator feeling unattractive to women. After all, that are speaking about Michelangelo, not him.
