“This cannot be, by no assay of reason. ‘Tis a pageant to keep us in false gaze.” could be translated to “This is not true, just a trick to deceive us,” This passage is important because it happens during act I scene iii where the senators are discussing Othello, and this scene is what starts the plot moving faster. I do like how descriptive the original text is, but I will admit that the translated version is easier to understand as a modern reader. The translated version sounds less formal that I would have thought, since a senator is saying the line. If I was professionally translating the scene, I would probably use more formal sounding to invoke the speaker’s status.

I think it is interesting to think about how in future generations the English we use today will likely sound old timey and strange. The language Shakespeare used was normal for the times, and now most modern people can’t quite understand his expressions.
