Camera Range

The video begins with a medium shot of the subject, displaying a disgruntled female employee’s body language and facial expression while packing items from her work desk. Although the opening scene is not a long shot range, the audience can still view some of the subject’s surroundings. Instead, the medium shot range focuses on the main subject, the female character, and communicates through other contextual information. For example, the office furniture in a work atmosphere speaks to the audience that this employee is at work. In addition, the facial expression derives that this is an unpleasant experience.

Point of View

The second scene of the video introduces a new concept through an establishing shot from outside an office building. This point of view aims to provide an overview of the setting by displaying the mood and tone. Thus granting the audience full access from an outsider’s perspective. In addition, the long-distance imagery communicates the realism of people leaving their jobs. Furthermore, the establishing shot conveys the location when it shows the office building in its entirety. Moreover, this camera angle will help the audience understand the narrative while pulling them into the experience of the scene.

Lighting

Throughout this video, there were various types and qualities of lighting. At the start of scene two (0:06), there is low lighting conveying the mystery and hidden motives of the employees. Similarly, the darker lighting sets the mood, which communicates this is not a time of celebration or happiness. In comparison, scene eleven at (0:49) of the video demonstrates high-key lighting. High-key lighting introduces a heightened mood and triggers positive emotion. For example, during the high-key lighting scene, the subject is outside on a beautiful day with his flowers. Furthermore, it conveys a sense of hope for better days to come for the employees. The written text of open captions reinforces what the high key lighting speaks to viewers.

Editing

At the start of this video, a match dissolve was displayed around the (0:00-0:04) mark. For instance, at 0:00, the female image appears without motion then dissolves into a matching image with similar composition. This scene conveys the character’s thoughts and the relationship between scenes. Furthermore, this dissolve shot communicates to viewers that they are related and belong back-to-back. This video only uses the dissolve editing feature during the opening. From the second scene onward, transitions are a quick straight cut.

Sound

The film begins free of sound from the 0:00-0:04 mark. Only imagery and the narrative open captions appear. This silence communicates persuasively as this first scene initiates viewer suspense. Promptly at 0:05, sound introduces itself with a low tone at a slow tempo. At this point, the film score begins to enhance the narrative, thus allowing the audience to see with their ears. The volume then increases at the 0:17 mark introducing a new scene highlighting informative statistics of the film’s topic. The non-diegetic sound gradually intensifies at 0:34, and so does the tempo, signifying the seriousness of the narrative. For instance, during the 0:34 mark, it displays a male character with closed eyes, symbolizing praying hands. All of these combinations encourage and trigger emotion from the audience. Towards the final scenes, the sound intensity decreases at the 1:03 mark and conveys optimism to viewers until the film ends. The sound design within this film rhetorically influences what the audience will see and from what perspective.

Analysis Tool Reflection

Although the Rhetorical Analysis of the film was broad, it did not overwhelm me to the point of message overload. Instead, this week’s analysis tool was effective because it helped me understand and learn how film communicates through the different types of sound, camera angles, point of view, and more. I did not sense gaps in my discussion, and I could incorporate a relatable takeaway from each sector within the analysis. In comparison, the film examples made this week’s study different from written media. For example, the video examples were beneficial as they allowed me to compare and contrast them against my film.

Potential Enhancements

If I continued to work on this film, I would enhance it with voiceover incorporation. This enhancement addition would also require the fusion of audio ducks into the film. I prefer that the sound plays at a lower volume while speaking, and the audio duck feature provides this option. In addition, while I appreciate how the volume gradually intensifies as it complements the film’s before and after makeover narrative, I would decrease it somewhat around the 0:40 mark.
