Overall, this course has helped me a lot. I have been introduced to and learned a lot from the material taught over the course of this semester. There were many lessons to be taught throughout this course but there are a few that will stick with me the most. One of the lessons I have learned is how to direct writing to specific audiences in the context of discourse communities. This is best represented by my “Remix/Reflection” assignment in which I created an art form to appeal to a specific audience. There are different ways in communicating with different audiences. There are settings where you do not have to be as formal as you will have to be in certain settings. For example, you would not email your peers as you would email your professor. Learning how to distinguish these different approaches and how to successfully carry out these approaches is vital especially in the professional environment. Another thing we did this semester is examine the meaning and practice of literacy. Literacy has expanded over the eras of time. There have been many mediums used to write such as the quill, typewriter, pencil, pen, and now keyboards. This topic is reflected in my “Informal Writing 1” assignment. This course gave me an admiration for writing and I will use this admiration to inspire my future students. I have a new-found understanding of exploring the rhetorical nature of writing and communication. Aristotle defines rhetoric as “the faculty of discovering in any particular case all of the available means of persuasion.” This requires the use of all three forms of persuasion, ethos, logos, and pathos. These are three different writing styles that aim to appeal to their audience through different approaches. This is another subject that revolves around knowing your audience and how to best reach them. Knowing how to connect with your audience strengthens language skills. Composing effectively in both print and digital modes has also impacted my learning this semester. My “Remix/Reflection” displays this skill the best. The research paper I composed was the print mode and my art form was the digital mode. The research paper is just that, a paper. The remix displays my research paper’s topic through digital art to convey the message. A lot of people would prefer an infographic as opposed to a research paper, it captures more attention. Since the decline in interest in writing, we either have to adapt to society or try to revive it. All in all, I enjoyed this course and learned valuable lessons for personal and professional development.
