Doing these exercises made me think of a few things I would change. The pronouns exercise was outdated. While teaching correct pronoun agreement, it forces you to think that using they/them/theirs in a singular form is wrong and that he/him/his is the default. Fifteen years ago, using they/them/theirs as singular pronouns was not common and considered to be “wrong”. However, language has evolved and they can be used for both singular and plural. They should change that if this was to be used in present society. Although it is still debated, some people do use it’s in a possessive form rather than he, she , or they. People actually do it fairly often when speaking and some do not think twice about it. But, the exercise teaches that using it’s in a possessive form is incorrect. That may need to be revised and updated. Lastly, the faults exercise was pretty straightforward. However, the last set of directions was too simple. It did not give any instructions other than correcting the faults, but it leaves one to question if there are any limits. Someone could just completely change and rework the entire example. That would be a solution, but it does not reflect what they learned if so much is different from the original.
