Design Idea File #1

This document is a flyer I received to my student email from Chartway arena advertising a children’s concert. I chose this flyer because I remember it caught my attention when I opened it and I ultimately looked into the show and bought tickets for my son and I, so I think it’s effective.
The first image depicts that top of the flyer that grabs the users attention and invokes emotion. It doesn’t have a lot of information but it is brightly colored and clearly advertises a concert that will have Sesame Street characters, as well as displaying the date and location. It applies to the user’s pathos by invoking feelings of excitement, happiness, and curiosity. I think this part is mainly to draw in the user to look into the show. Someone who doesn’t have kids or young relatives is not going to be interested and therefore will not scroll down to find out more. Someone who would be interested has just enough information as well as positive emotions to want to look into the event.
The second half of the document uses pathos by giving the user a more detailed description of the event as well as specific times and links to more information as well as tickets. Once the user is reading this part of the document they are likely very interested and have decided they trust the company and are likely to attend. The company is implying a fun family show with a good message. This is appealing to parents, especially those with young children. Sesame Street is also a well recognized children’s show, so the company has credibility from the association.
Displaying the information in a simplistic style it draws attention to the two links, as well as emphasizes the pre-sale code. This design choice is directing the user to buy tickets and evoking a sense of urgency (ethos) to buy them quickly through pre-sale.
The document does not list the price of the tickets, so if the user wants to consider buying tickets they will have to click the link and look at specific tickets. Chances are once someone makes it this far, and knows they have first choice of seating with the code, they will buy the tickets.
