Assistance of AI in Fighting Cybercrime

Introduction:

The purpose of the article “Digital Criminal Investigations in the Era of Artificial Intelligence” is to research the potency of using Artificial Intelligence in criminal investigations. The research is conducted to investigate whether there are legal restriction in the usage of Artificial Intelligence or whether the current legal framework allows room for Artificial Intelligence to be used in criminal Investigations. Due to the rise of technology related crimes, researchers believe that Artificial Intelligence can assist in investigating digital crimes.

Research Methods:

The conducted research employed a few different strategies in conducting the research. The strategies included qualitative research, analytical research, and descriptive analysis, all three methodologies where employed, which eventually assisted the conductors of the research to reach a conclusion with their findings. The research consisted of both secondary and primary information, which was a conglomerate of legal codes, legislative opinions and “scientific resources pertinent to criminal procedural laws, regulations, rules and associated documentation” (Fagir,2023, p.80). Other information used “included comprehensive analysis of existing literature pertaining to forensic investigation and criminal procedural laws with a specific focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (Fagir,2023, p.80).

Body:

According to the “Digital Criminal Investigations in the Era of Artificial Intelligence” Artificial Intelligence has been very helpful in helping law enforcement agencies fight cybercrimes by employing certain digital applications that use AI for their digital operations. Digital tools such as computational intelligence, neural networks, artificial immune systems, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, fuzzy logic and heuristics have provided a great deal of assistance in detecting and fighting cybercrimes. These tools provide different benefits via the functionalities to law enforcement agencies and the judicial system by providing services such as being able to detect denial of service attacks, virus detections and DNA analysis. Without these tools fighting digital crimes will be extremely difficult if not impossible

Conclusion:

There is a connection between Artificial Intelligence and Cyberlaw that needs to happen for society to get a better grip on fighting cybercrimes. Though current law enforcement agencies and judiciaries employ various technologies to assisting in investigating and fighting cybercrimes there are still some challenges they face in fighting cybercrimes. One of their main challenges is sorting through infinite amount of data to conduct investigations, which sometimes results in proper data identification and storage. Furthermore, there are privacy and data authenticity challenges that investigators face when investigating cybercrimes. These challenges are a result of current privacy laws and authenticity laws that regulate what data can be used in criminal law and ways in which data can be attained and used in the court of law. To further use AI to assist in fighting crimes the following recommendations were made because of the research. “Prioritize high-risk cases by leveraging diverse data sources, thereby promoting fairness and informed outcomes” (Fagir,2023, p.89). “Utilize AI to forecast crime patterns, identify potential suspects, and bolster security through advanced analysis of images, videos, and voice data” (Fagir,2023, p.89). “Incorporate AI-powered smart surveillance systems to proactively mitigate crime. Real-time analysis can be employed to identify patterns, predict potential criminal activities, and  facilitate  timely  intervention” (Fagir,2023,p.89)

Relatability to Social Science and Contribution to Society:

The research relates to social science because most of the aspects of social science were employed in this research. Which ensures that the results of the research can help us humans better understand cybercrime and how to succeed in fighting it by using AI generated tools and applications. The research narrowed down what the current challenges of fighting cybercrimes are and how we can better position ourselves or employ different strategies and tools to assist in fighting cybercrimes.
