Journal 5: Rating Motives for Cybercrime

There are many reasons why someone would cyber offend. These range from entertainment, political, revenge, boredom, recognition, for money, and multiple other reasons. I would rank entertainment as a five on the list. I don’t think this is very common among cybercriminals participating in these crimes. The political reason seems more common to me than entertainment. Political reasons for cybercrime would be a four on the scale in my opinion. Revenge being a motive for cybercrime seems more likely than many of the other motives. An employee getting revenge on his former employer or an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend hacking or posting something that would shame the person who dumped or cheated on them. Revenge is a three on the list. Boredom seems a highly unlikely reason to commit cybercrimes and wouldn’t motivate the offender nearly as much as some of the other reasons. Boredom would only be a six on the scale. Among the circle of more advanced, ritualistic hackers I see recognition being a common motive. This would also be a great way for a new cybercriminal to gain credibility. If the offender is socially inept, they could use this to gain friends and fame among piers. Recognition clocks in at a five on the meter. A cyber offense done to gain money is by far the most common attack in my opinion. This is the highest motive if the criminal is greedy, poor, a kleptomaniac, etc. Any cybercrime for money is a definitive one on the scale because humans are primarily motivated by gaining wealth due to the capitalistic society. I would rate all the other multiple reasons as a five collectively because all the most common ones are covered above. These are all valid motives for cybercrimes, but there are degrees to the commonness of specific ones.
