Journal 9: The Media’s influence on how we view Cybersecurity

The media portrays cyberspace to be way more unsafe than it really is. Scenes of databases being attacked and everyone scrambling to stop it are shown to be frequent occurrences. It also shows hackers to be mysterious, scary figures with dark clothes and masks, when they are normal looking and dressing people like the media usually portrays the victim. Hackers are shown to use voice modulators or robo-callers but deepfake technology in the real world can mimic a different human voice as opposed to the hacker’s actual one. In movies or shows the characters plug external devices into their computers as if they pose no danger. These devices can have viruses, spyware, etc. There are tons of Hollywood cyber-terms that are invented to make things seem very complicated or scary. Individuals are shown in movies to be able to read tons of code and understand the context of it within seconds, but in real life, this is simply not the case. Every once and a while Hollywood accurately showcases accurate hacking, however, there are mostly things the media portrays that inaccurately showcase cybersecurity.
