There are a lot of reasons that cyber victimization goes underreported in my personal opinion. First, the victims most likely don’t report the incidents because they don’t want the shame associated with the event. This would be due to the fact that when people hear about someone who has experienced cyber victimization, they assume it was the victim’s fault. Reasons for this would include the victim not having anti-virus software, clicking on sketchy links/sites, and otherwise being careless with their security while online. Second, in most cases it’s not like the police can do anything and if the incident involves a debit/credit card the owner should just call to cancel it. Lastly, it usually doesn’t involve anyone besides the central victim. If the cybercrimes had a farther reach, like to the victim’s friends or family, they would be more likely to report it. There are many variables to consider when thinking about why cyber victimization goes underreported, but in my opinion, the ones listed above summarize the issue.
