What are the connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU?

At Old Dominion University, there are numbers of disciplines that address entrepreneurship. Business is a discipline that connects with entrepreneurship as it covers the aspects of management, operation, and decision making. The Strome College of Business offers an entrepreneurship program that teaches students knowledge and skills on how to start their own businesses. A discipline in Engineering is also connected to entrepreneurship at ODU. The ODU Center of Enterprise Innovation provides the resources to help students apply their skills to develop innovative technology and solutions before launching their own business venture. The discipline of Art connects to entrepreneurship at ODU by enhancing the creativity and innovation of students to help develop their entrepreneurial skills in fields such as performing arts, media, entertainment, and design.

Is entrepreneurship an art or science?

Entrepreneurship in the art perspective involves creativity, intuition, and personal expression. Thinking about business ventures that is different and innovative comes from the creativity of the mind which relates to artistic expression. It is the art of creating something new and developing unique business models that lead to innovation. Although, entrepreneurship can also be seen in the science perspective because it requires decision-making based on gathered data and systematic processing. Entrepreneurs must conduct research and look at theories in order to have a good start on their business venture. In conclusion, entrepreneurship is both art and science. How is failure good?

Failure is a part of life that helps people grow. Failure provides an opportunity for people to learn and gain from their mistakes. The lessons people learn from failure will be used to identify areas that needs to be improved in order to become successful. In Jesper Juul’s article “Video games make us all losers!”, it conveys the message that the rather than focusing on the outcome of a game, it is about the experience learned in the game that is important. Players will lose a game, however, they will learn about their mistakes and create better game plays in order to win it. Playing a game is more than just the defeat or victory, rather it is the experience gained from playing the game. Failure can boost up resilience and perseverance. It encourages us to go back up when we fall down and come back even stronger. Failure gives people the opportunity to reflect on their experience and learn from it.

What have I learned from failing?

Failure helped me realize what I need to work on myself. I remember failing a cooking test for my job because I did not meet the time required and did not cut the accurate cut size of a vegetable that is needed to be prepared. After I received my results, I took the time to reflect on how I did and asked for feedbacks on how I can do better the next time that I take my cooking test. Without the cooking test and receiving the feedback given to me, I would have been cooking and cutting the wrong way. I learned from my failure and did not give up on passing the cooking test. The next time around, I successfully passed my cooking test because at that point, I knew what I needed to work on to improve myself. I learned that failing the first time does not mean you will fail on the second time. If I keep persevering, I will achieve the success that I desire to meet.

What ethical issues might arise related to what I am working on?

My team is currently working on an Informative game about cyber awareness for children. An ethical issue that might arise with this entrepreneurial idea is that since it is a game, it may become addicting. Excessive screen time may be an ethical issue when kids are playing the game and they can be addicted. It is encouraged that we should implement limiting screen time and promote responsible playing. Since it is informative, kids may choose to play the game rather than their traditional education. Privacy and Data Protection may be another ethical issue that may arise since it will collect and store user data, including personal information such as an email address, name, and age. We will include obtaining proper consent from the parents and guardians of the children and comply with relevant privacy regulations to protect the children’s privacy.
