1.     What are the connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU?

The connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU are multidisciplinary.  This multidisciplinary approach at ODU has launched many different success stories like 3D printing in engineering, delicious baked goods in culinary arts, to clothing merchandise in fine arts.  ODU has a great support system at the Strome Entrepreneurial Center, which serves as a hub for meeting and brainstorming ideas with other entrepreneurs.  ODU provides entrepreneurship-related programs and services, drawing on a variety of disciplines to assist aspiring entrepreneurs and the many creative companies it has helped create.

2.     Is entrepreneurship an art or science?

Entrepreneurship is a combination of both an art and science.  The artistic component involves creativity that allows entrepreneurs think outside of the box to solve complex problems.  The science component may include data-driven decision making in which entrepreneurs collect and analyze market trends, new technologies, and risks.  Entrepreneurs should utilize both art and science in their design thinking to solve difficult problems.  I believe that in the early stages of entrepreneurship, solving a problem may necessitate the use of art, whereas science can assist in later stages such as planning or prototyping.

3. How is failure good?

Failure is a valuable learning experience that encourages us to learn and improve from our mistakes that we have made in the past.  Failure makes us stronger and motivates us to work harder to achieve our goals.  Failure can also make us more vulnerable to ask others for help.  This can also lead to better communication and collaboration along with personal growth.  Overall, failure is not always a bad thing.  Everyone fails at some point in their lives, and it is how we manage and learn from that failure that allows us to succeed in our lives.

4.     What have I learned from failing?

Most of the time that I have failed at something, I did not give one hundred percent of my effort.  I realized that if I didn’t want to fail at something, I had to put in the effort and concentrate on the task at hand.  I cannot simply try to finish tasks at the last minute.  I need to start early, plan my time management, and complete the task as soon as possible so that I can check and review it before the deadline.  When I fail at something, I feel as if I want to give up, but I cannot give up.  My pride does not allow me to give up even if it makes me upset and down.  I use that energy to work harder and focus on achieving my goals.

5.     What ethical issues might arise related to what I am working on?

The ethical issues that might arise in our group’s entrepreneurship project could be many different forms.  An ethical issue could be in the decision-making process of the innovation we will be proposing.  Is the innovation really original, or did we do our due diligence to see if someone else came up with it also?  Were we fair in our decision-making?  Maintaining trust among team members requires transparency and accountability in decision-making.  Equal participation and teamwork, some members of the group may not contribute as much as they should.  Will the members of the group be ethical and write their peer assessments honestly?  Entrepreneurial partners must be honest with one another, unethical business actions can lead to a loss of trust amongst partners, which can lead to a loss of customer trust.
