Week 5 – Journal

  1. What are the connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU?
  2. Is entrepreneurship an art or science?
  3. How is failure good?
  4. What have I learned from failing?
  5. What ethical issues might arise related to what I am working on?

ODU embraces interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and connects students with liked individuals to help them get started. ODU also offers numerous resources on campus to assist students in their pursuit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneur is for everyone, therefore anyone from different backgrounds, professions or experience have the ability to turn ideas into enterprise. The key is knowing where to begin and how to get there.

Entrepreneurship can be both art and science. Art is creative imagination and a useful skill in production, science is the application of general knowledge to uncover truths using the scientific method. Translating any ideas from both science and art, or one or the other, leads to innovative entrepreneurship.

Failure is good because it is a necessary step for success. It is the progress that you make in order to succeed. Failure is an opportunity for self-growth and reevaluation of your strengths and goals. Having failed at something you have worked so hard on does not necessarily mean that the whole progress was a failure, it just means that something along the way of the progress did not work. This gives you the opportunity to address what did not work and what needs to be addressed. Personally, I think failure is good because it allows you to learn from your mistakes.

Ethical entrepreneurship is a guide to making responsible and trustworthy decisions-making. I am an overthinking person, which could be stressful sometimes. Am I doing the right thing? How will my decision affect myself and the people around me? I believe that strong ethical practices attract people with the right talent and promote the integrity of the business. Being an overthinker, I would say that one ethical issue that might arise would be unrealistic and conflicting goals. Setting a goal for a short amount of time seems unrealistic and unattainable. Although it is not unethical, the pressure can sometimes lead to cutting corners just to satisfy unrealistic objectives. This to me is being irresponsible and making untrustworthy decisions.
