The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a nonprofit foundation that works to improve the security of software. It is a source for developers and technologists to secure the web. - What is your overall perspective on the entrepreneurship experience?
The entrepreneurship experience has definitely been interesting. I was taken out of my comfort zone and was assigned to a group in order to create a business that would be beneficial to those in society. This course allowed me to learn what goes on behind the scenes of creating a business along with the ins and outs of it. Entrepreneurship is definitely not a solo job, it requires working as a team to be successful and make the most out of the business you created.
- How did entrepreneurship prepare or not prepare you to be a competitive candidate for vacant positions?
By taking this course, I think that it gives employers a different perspective on just writing papers and doing labs. The ePortfolio in this course allows us to showcase the business we created and shows employers that we have teamwork skills as well as knowledge of what goes into running a business. It allows us to showcase our skills beyond just in the classroom. We are put into a position where we are entrepreneurs and we come up with what type of business we want to create and what goes into running it.
- What suggestions do you have to improve the experience?
One suggestion I have to improve the experience is to be able to collaborate more. It was a group project, but I didn’t understand why everything was individual. I felt that it took away from the group experience. Therefore, I would have liked to have seen assignments where we collaborated instead of having separate papers. I feel like this would have been more beneficial if the professor is trying to see team participation and involvement within a project.
- What’s next for you?
After graduating from ODU, I plan to get an entry level position in IT/Cybersecurity. I will be working on getting various certifications, including (ISC)2 Certified in Cybersecurity and the CompTIA A+, Network +, and Security + certifications. I am considering going back for my Master’s degree, but I plan to work for a little bit before then. Overall, my goal is to start working within the cybersecurity field and growing my skills to move up.
