Safety Task Team Takes Message to Shipbuilders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Through an ongoing series of crew talks, a Safety Task Team in the Virginia<\/em>-Class Submarine Program is spreading the word about how to remain injury free, and how the team can help achieve that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team members recently spoke to roughly 50 shipbuilders, discussing common-sense safety tips and urging them to ask questions and share concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can approach us,\u201d said Mary \u201cFrankie\u201d Cupp,<\/strong> an X33 marine painter. \u201cWe want you to know who we are. We want you to come with your questions, your issues. I can guarantee if you come to me, I\u2019m going to look at whatever you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Safety Task Team\u2019s duties include conducting weekly inspections and analyzing injury trends. Another priority is supporting a culture of safety. The team is spreading its message across the VCS program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caleb Holzberger,<\/strong> an X18 welder\/instructor, spoke to the group about fire safety. \u201cBuild clean,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you see a mess, clean it up. It\u2019s hard to start fires when there is nothing to catch fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team\u2019s message hit home with the crew, said Daniel Knoll<\/strong>, general foreman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving the safety task team talk to the X32M team was great,\u201d he said. \u201cIt gave our team the opportunity to meet the members and learn more about what the safety task team does.
