Shipbuilders Working in Confined Spaces Get Fresh S.T.A.R.T.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newport News Shipbuilding is launching a new campaign called SMART S.T.A.R.T. to increase awareness of safety requirements while working in confined spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S.T.A.R.T. stands for signs, tags, access, running ventilation and two forms of lighting. The easy-to-remember acronym reminds shipbuilders of important steps to take before working in confined spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees should look for banners, posters, badge cards and stickers being distributed to various production areas that promote the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the new acronym will definitely be beneficial to help with remembering what is required,\u201d said Khoury Waltrip<\/strong> (K46), a general foreman. \u201cYou are the first and last defense for your own safety. Don\u2019t put your life in somebody else\u2019s hands. If you see somebody doing wrong, stop them and challenge it. That\u2019s what we need: backup from everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This campaign supports compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and NNS standards regarding confined spaces. Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) urges shipbuilders to observe the instructions posted on confined space signage and ensure appropriate controls are in place to work safely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
