Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Exploring Culture
I gained some understanding of different Hispanic cultures through some of the videos provided about different cultures in Lingro Learning. Lingro Learning had videos, advertisements, and articles from different Hispanic cultures.
These lessons embedded within Lingro Learning helped me understand some cultural references that are embedded within the Spanish language and see the historical root of some of the practices that my own Hispanic family adopts. Having only lived in America, the Hispanic culture here is extremely diverse whereas people who live in Spanish-speaking countries their cultures seem to vary only from country to country.
Engaging in Communities
I think engaging in community is vital to being a constructive citizen. Working within a community through volunteer services or learning a new language that allows you to interact with people in diverse communities helps you to gain a better worldview.
I have volunteered at many different places on my travels over the years and I currently volunteer at the Slover Library in Norfolk, VA. Volunteering here has allowed me to meet many people of different backgrounds and learn about the different communities that live in this area.
Interpersonal Communication
Talk Abroad was challenging and rewarding. With talk abroad, I was able to gauge my growth with the language and gain a better understanding of how the conversations in Spanish are in a live setting instead of a heavily practiced one.
With the Talk Abroad conversations I was able to speak to native Spanish speakers without any help so while it was challenging it taught me what to expect in live conversations and what areas of my Spanish skills I am lacking in the most. The conversations with the instructor were easier for me to navigate because she would help me or correct me if I got stuck

Presentational Speaking
We performed a pronunciation assignment that gave me the opportunity to present my understanding of the language.

Presentational Writing
Our discussion board posts gave us the opportunity to answer some prompts in Spanish that are posted for the class to read. While most of the discussion is in English, we were still able to work on our sentence structure and vocabulary.

Interpretive Listening
I utilized this skill in the TalkAbroad conversations and the conversations with my professor. I had to listen attentively and try to understand most if not all of the speaker’s language and participate in the conversation.

Interpretive Reading
In Lingro Learning there were many articles that had to be read for conversations that we were assigned to fill in the blanks for.
These articles were good for working on my reading skills and for learning sentence structure. While I did not know all of the words that were included in the articles I was able to find words I did know and interpret the paragraphs with context clues. Not only did my interpretive skills improve during the semester but I was able to improve my conjugation and vocabulary through the fill-in-the-blank assignments within these paragraphs.
