On the disorder quiz, I scored a 3, which is considered “risky usage”. This was a bit surprising to me. I do use social media like YouTube and Instagram more than I probably should. I love watching long videos that discuss obscure topics or video essays about movies, shows or games. YouTube is amazing for this, but does take up a lot of time that I should use for homework or working on hobbies of mine. I think I absolutely use social media too much simply because it takes up so much of my time, so I can absolutely see the correlation in my score. The items on the scale itself are a little outdated nowadays, given how social media is used. The major switch to short-form content ironically takes up more time than ever. The shortness of videos/posts gets people addicted, wanting to scroll for more content for longer. Meaning that one or two videos can easily turn into 100 without a user realizing. This quick and accessible form of content has many people absolutely hooked and is easily the leading contribution to social media disorder. Items to add to this disorder questionnaire would be more time, ambition and day-to-day habit related. This pattern of addiction is found all across the world simply because it takes advantage of how the brain utilizes the hormone dopamine. Releasing lots in a short amount of time, which keeps users engaged and scrolling, leading to companies making more ad revenue.
