With my field-of-interest being Marine Biology, Cell Biology is essential to my studies. It would be difficult to pinpoint one thing from this course that is relevant to Marine Biology since most of the concepts relate to the biology of marine organisms. However, the extracellular matrix (ECM) is incredibly important to marine life. Marine eukaryotes such as cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), which I am most interested in, rely on the ECM. The ECM has a vital role in various cell activities like cell growth, wound healing, and cell migration. Cell Biology gives further information on the cellular level of organisms, which is important to the survival of all marine organisms.

I chose this particular meme not only because I found it genuinely funny, but because it teaches the function of the lysosome by personifying the organelle. When you teach the function of something in a way that makes it more relatable, learning a certain topic can be easier for individuals. In this meme, the lysosome is portrayed as a person that is paranoid, a person that is ready to fight any threat. Such a portrayal is quite accurate because one of the lysosomes functions is to fight intruders, i.e., viruses. Of course, the lysosome can’t do this by itself, as it requires assistance from the enzymes contained inside the lysosome. These enzymes have the responsibility of breaking down various matter, such as food. In those occasions where the lysosome fights off viruses, the lysosome is most widely known to destroy itself in order to kill the virus. Basically, this meme is a way to teach people about the lysosome and its important functions all while remaining unserious and entertaining.
