Personal Statement Essay
My name is Josiah Cohen. I have been a student at Old Dominion University for 2 years now. My time here has brought me many new experiences and allowed me to meet new people and learn more about myself. Coming into college I was very indecisive about my future and who I was really meant to be. Although now I still believe I am working on figuring it out I have begun to push myself more toward a direction where I believe my skill set can help others. I went into a Biomed major with the hopes of one day becoming a forensic pathologist. While here at Old Dominion, I want to exceed my own expectations, learn more about myself, and be someone who people can rely upon. Throughout my life, my experiences have led me to believe that the best type of life is being there for others. With that in mind, it is why I want to be a forensic pathologist. I want people to receive rightful retribution. Being on the field or in the lab I feel as though I would be fulfilling a goal if I am helping people. Those wrongfully in prison or murdered need to be brought to justice in a moral and correct way. This stems primarily from my search for adventure; living a life where I can work in a field and not behind a desk has always been preferred to me. College is helping me achieve this goal by teaching me how to manage large amounts of work in a new environment, discussing with my peers, and keeping myself updated on current work and situations within classes and Old Dominion. Classes that I am taking at ODU are teaching me the importance of smaller things for example Physics is showing me the importance of math within the scientific field.
The more I study within ODU the more I have come to understand the basis of the education system. Its primary goal is to teach you more about how to be a well-rounded person in society. To not just have skills that will help in your future goal but any future goal you may try and set. This change of perspective has pushed me to try harder to grasp topics I may not need or want to learn about and continue my studies here. The more progress I have shown the more work I want to put in. Old Dominion has set new precedents within my life to strive towards a future that should Help and provide for others. From meeting new people to advancing my scholarly knowledge all advancements I have made here have enlightened me to a new perspective that should be taken into consideration when looking at any goal I set.
