The process of DNA replication is one thing I learned in cell biology that helped me make the connection to forensics. Before cell division, cells replicate their genetic material through DNA replication. DNA replication is critical in forensics for identifying suspects in criminal investigations. To identify whether a potential suspect was present at the scene of a crime, DNA evidence from crime scenes can be compared to the DNA of potential suspects. Understanding the process of DNA replication has made me realize how important it is to preserve DNA evidence and keep it clean during collection and processing. It has also assisted me in understanding the limitations of DNA evidence and the need for additional forms of proof to corroborate DNA results.
