Article Review 1

For the article review, I chose an article written on the subject of Cyberbullying and delving into the view of the affects that it has on the LGBTQ community. This article, titled “LGBTQ Cyberbullying on Online Learning Platforms Among University Students” is a study done by Abreu & Kenny that showed that the effect of cyberbullying of the LGBTQ group. They found that this led to academic problems, depression, and low self-esteem led to suicidal tendencies. This sheds a light into the main problem that faces this new age of technology, which is the fact that as technology advances, so too do the ways that people will find to harass and bully minorities. The problem only worsened with the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, which forced everyone inside, and made bullying no longer a norm, but cyber bullying became the next way for people, especially children, to find an outlet for their frustrations. This ties into our CYSE201S class, in where we discussed the psychology of the people who typically are the targets of bullying, and the aggressors of how they pick their future victims. When these members of the LGBTQ community are bullied, many studies have shown evidence that regards this bullying in Thailand, for example, Boonoon (2010) and Euajarusphan (2021), studied that the bullying situation in Thailand when teenagers and youth were recurringly distraught, harassed, humiliated, threatened with violence, or otherwise targeted by another teenager or youth using modems such as texting, e-mails, messengers, or other types of digital technology. This goes hand in hand with the sociology aspect of cyber security, in where there are also few studies about the factors that pertain to the different types of social support inside this article. A possible solution to this problem was to potentially prevent the problem of this group from being cyberbullied, the parents, university, and communities should cooperate to support and prevent this circumstance from occurring in the digital era in this disruptive world, through the means of educating and researching what goes into the bullying itself. The benefits proposed were that society and other cyber influencers should create a new social paradigm to stop the cyberbullying behavior, prevent LGBTQ cyberbullying, and support the social equity for every person. As well as the article stipulating that further research should go into how to support and uplift the LGBTQ community and the issues that they face.
