Article Review 2

The article I chose for this week’s article review was “Cyber threat severity rises during holidays”. This article, by Vikki Davies delves into the Criminology and Sociology aspects of the holidays, and how cyber security criminals take advantage of them. According to Davies, “1-in-5 cyberthreats detected between June and the end of September 2022 were higher risk, compared to just 1-in-80 in January”. These cyber security hackers target smaller end businesses during these holidays while the companies are more likely to be understaffed and less likely to be able to respond to these threats. These smaller businesses are easier to target mainly because while they already lack the numbers of staff that bigger companies have, they also most likely do not have the same amount of training and security measures in place to be able to defend themselves as well. This article uses resources such as Barracuda, which is a security, networking, and storage company, to gather information that pertains and relates to this upping of holiday attacks. The study done shows that a majority of these attacks are breaches of accounts, such as Microsoft 360, and communication to a known IP address of threat intelligence. By knowing this information, these smaller companies can adapt and train their people against going onto sites that communicate with threats, and better safeguard their passwords to their business emails and information. Even going as far as adding extra security in the form of Multi Factor Authentication.
