Four majors offered by ODU that relate to cybersecurity are cybercrime, communication, cyber operations, and information systems and technology. Cybercrime prepares you for occupations in law enforcement and information technology. Though centered around computer crime investigations, they acquire the technological skills of cybersecurity, digital forensics, computer networking, and common programming languages like Java and C+. Communication isn’t necessarily required for cybersecurity but can be a sharp tool within the field. Becoming a creative, culturally-aware, highly efficient communicator will separate you from other candidates. Cyber Operations is an interdisciplinary major encompassing cyberspace and related operations that are both technical and non-technical in nature. Though a complementary discipline to cybersecurity, it places a particular emphasis on technologies and techniques applicable to all operational and system levels. Inspired by real-life scenarios, skills, and competencies, gained through this major will give you an edge in system security. Information Systems and Technology, last but not least, offers a unique combination of business knowledge and technical skills. Emphasizing the development of business analysis and system implementation skills, which can provide a basis for job entry, career development, and flexibility amid the rapid changes in information technology. Though cybersecurity can be marked as a broad term, it really is considering the different avenues you can take. Programming doesn’t necessarily line up with daily life, communication can promote critical thinking for cyber operations. However separate, these majors can intermittently collide at any point in time. I like that aspect especially since I want to be an ethical hacker. The flexibility given in this field is a big motivation for me. Digital Forensics or Criminal Justice seems like a major I’d look into if my first choice does not pan out. In this highly competitive and increasingly technological business, this is just the beginning, and I am along for the ride.
