Entry #3

Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.

Storing electronic information, in general, is just morally wrong but here are four ethical issues to back it up. First and foremost it violates company internet policies and leads toward a downward shift in confidence toward senior leaders. You could call them Cyber Loafers or Cyberslackers but each covers the bases for when they surf the internet versus working. There are a variety of different ways to operate, yes, but purely not doing anything at all is not the same. Second, it can lead to abusive behavior using the information they collected to consistently mistreat those around them. Supervisors and Managers can do this in the blink of an eye and laugh at the consequences. Furthermore, if your situation does not include race gender, or ethnic origin it offers no legal protection. Third, it is theft since the information is being taken without their consent. Manipulating their well-being in the process. One out of every 40 employees in 2012 was caught stealing from their employer. Even more startling is that these employees steal on average 5.5 times more than shoplifters. Trust is scarce these days, and this would only hurt your situation.  Fourth in short they are lying to their employees. Whether senior or entry-level they seem like they have their best interest at heart when in reality they are not. It’s the fastest way to lose trust from your employees, yet one out of five reports that they have been lied to in the last year. When it’s all said and done, it’s a waste of company time. All it takes is a conversation to get everything they need to know about a person. They don’t deserve to be detailed into a document, or go as far as strengths and weaknesses. Just do the right thing don’t create this bad habit, and treat others respectfully.
