How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance by causing problems internally versus externally in the workplace. In this case of the cyber field, it can refer to the deliberate, malicious attempt to sabotage an organization or an unintentional find. There are many motivations as to why workplace deviance would occur. The most common instance is from an employee who had been let go, but the IT department did not remove his authorization credentials, which gave them access to do harm. Another example would be when an employee is actually given too much access to files that should be hidden from their view. Sometimes when an IT professional is setting up the user profiles, they can tend to give all of the user’s access to other files and folders that should be hidden. For instance, a regular employee should not have access to the payroll folder. Only the HR department and management should have access to these files because they can contain sensitive data, handled recklessly, different problems may transpire. The final reason workplace deviance would occur is if the employee willingly released sensitive information to someone else in exchange for personal gain. In this example, there are signs that can give away an insider threat. These include bringing a personal computer to work, spending more time on individual projects, or something new and shiny that seems out of their budget range. To be clear, assumption and theory are not the way to go when exposing a possible insider. Monitor their behavior for a while, and if it continues to get more suspicious then take steps to enforce the issue. Employees are human and have different things going on in their life which might shift their original attitude. Once sure, enforce strict policies in the workplace to make sure the workers on clear on what is ethical and what is not.
