As a cybersecurity major, I entered the program focused primarily on technical skills and certifications. Over time, my understanding of cybersecurity expanded beyond firewalls and packet captures to include governance, policy, human behavior, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. ODU challenged me not only to develop technical competency but also to think critically about how cybersecurity intersects with law, ethics, social systems, and organizational leadership.

The skills I value most from my degree program include risk analysis, structured problem solving, technical documentation, policy evaluation, and communication. Courses such as CYSE 301 (Foundations of Cybersecurity), CYSE 425W (Cybersecurity Policy), and CYSE 201S helped me understand both technical controls and the broader governance environment in which they operate. Interdisciplinary coursework through IDS further strengthened my ability to synthesize perspectives from political science, sociology, and management into cybersecurity discussions. These experiences have significantly improved my career readiness by preparing me to think beyond purely technical solutions.

One of the most valuable learning experiences during my time at ODU has been applying theory to real-world problems. Through labs, research projects, and policy analysis papers, I learned how cybersecurity decisions affect organizations and society. Courses requiring structured writing, such as CYSE 425W, strengthened my ability to analyze policy implications and defend positions using scholarly sources. Additionally, collaborative projects and leadership opportunities helped develop communication and teamwork skills essential for professional environments.

Obstacles throughout the program included balancing academic demands with work and family responsibilities. As a full-time student who also works and supports a family, time management became critical. Technical courses were often challenging due to the depth of material and the rapid evolution of cybersecurity technologies. I addressed these challenges by building structured study routines, utilizing office hours, forming study groups, and actively seeking mentorship. Certifications like Security+ and Network+ also reinforced foundational knowledge that supported coursework.

Previous courses and professional experiences were instrumental in completing the program. My background in hands-on IT work provided practical context when learning theoretical frameworks. Earlier coursework in networking and systems administration strengthened my understanding of risk management, policy analysis, and system defense strategies later in the program. Each course built upon the previous, reinforcing a layered understanding of cybersecurity.

Personal Reflection – Journey to ODU Introduction My experience at Old Dominion University has been transformative both academically and personally.
