SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

In Spanish 101, I used the text book, the internet and a Spanish dictionary to complete this course. The textbook is called Contrasena, and it was entirely online. I used Google translate and google to do most of the assignments. I also used a Webster Spanish dictionary that helped me write better sentences.

These products helped me to learn more about the Hispanic community. The textbook had sections about culture at the end of each chapter, and that helped me to learn more about Hispanic countries, and their different cultures. The internet helped me to find additional things that Spanish speaking countries do that the US doesn’t. Like at one point the textbook asked us to look up the most used social network in each country, and I learned that those countries have more in common with the US than I had originally thought.

Interpersonal Communication

Some of the interpersonal activities we have done in in are a video we did with a partner interviewing them about their classes, and other questions. Most of these activities came in the form of the conversation exercises though. We used those exercises to speak with each other and learn how to say the words correctly.

I have found that with each exercise I was getting more confident with the vocabulary and the correct pronunciations of the vocabulary. The most difficult part of this class for me was the speaking. The more I spoke the language the easier it became for me to gain confidence. I excelled at writing the words I was going to say, and that helped me to have an idea of what I wanted to say. I learned that the more I practiced and studied the easier it was to improve. I think if I could do it differently, I would have studied more from the beginning of the semester.

Presentational Speaking

The purpose of this video was to describe the university, and things that it does or does not have. Some other activities were asking our classmates questions, and do the conversation activities at the end of the chapter.

This video was to discuss the things that a university has such as dorms, libraries, and student centers. We also learned about distance and learned more descriptive words, like dirty, and clean. The most challenging part of this class for me was the speaking. It is easy to memorize how something is spelled, but it is entirely different when you try to say the words. I excelled at learning the vocabulary, and I tried my hardest to learn the correct pronunciation of each word. I think in order to do better next semester, I will try to learn to say the words as I learn their meaning.

Presentational Writing

This was the first project that we did for class. The purpose was to write down our profile, things like how old you are, where you are from, things like that. We also did an assignment on our schedules.

Since writing this assignment I have learned a lot more vocabulary and can be more descriptive of myself and others. As the semester went on the writing became much easier, but the vocabulary got more difficult as the semester went on. In order to overcome this obstacle, I had to put my head down and study more and learn each word and what it meant. The more I studied the better I did. I think next time will study harder from the get go and try my hardest to get it right.
