During the 2014 NBA season, NBA stars stood together and protested against police brutality against those who come from minority communities. The protests started when Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose wore a Warmup T-Shirt that had “I Can’t Breathe” written on it and that brought the attention to the entire sports world and inspired other NBA stars like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant to do the same. The shirts were a reference to a case of police brutality at the time against a black man named Eric Gardner in which “I Can’t Breathe” were his final words as he was getting choked out by a police officer which ultimately led to his death. The actions made by Derrick Rose and the other NBA stars had mixed reactions in the media. Some saw this as an opportunity for Athletes to use their platforms to shed light to everyday problems of injustice in the world while others were completely against it believing that politics and sports should never mix. The NBA players who wore those warm up T shirts were repeatedly advised to not wear them but they prioritized spreading the awareness over their own personal image in the media. This event started even greater movements later on that continue to this day. Media members repeatedly tell these athletes to stick to sports every time there is a protest involving social injustice but these players refuse to keep their mouths shut and continue to fight for the lives of those who come from the communities these athletes were raised in. This even sparked their fans to continue to spread awareness and protest with them on social media regardless of what media members are saying. These fans care more about what their favorite athletes are saying and they also believe what they are doing is right.
