My score on the social media disorder scale depicts that I am addicted to social media as every aspect of my life, including my relationship with friends and family, revolves around my access to social sites. For instance, I tend to be significantly preoccupied and dissatisfied when I cannot access social media, and in most cases experience withdrawal feelings when I am offline. Besides, my efforts to reduce my time on social media have been fruitless, ultimately causing me to neglect other important activities and rely on social platforms to handle negative emotions. As such, I have found myself deceiving or in conflict with my friends and family to spend time surfing.
The high score on the social media disorder scale portrays that I significantly depend on the sites, which is detrimental to my health, relationships, and daily routines. Besides impacting my relationships and daily tasks, spending most time sharing my life on social media exposes me to cybersecurity threats, as attackers are always looking for weaknesses to exploit on social sites. Trend Micro (2019) denotes that social media users engage in risky behaviors, including accepting friend requests from unknown and suspicious users or sharing posts exposing their private information for hackers to breach their accounts. Based on my social media habits, I am likelier to experience such attacks as I may unconsciously expose my private information to malicious third parties. Thus, as most criminals hide behind fake profiles, it is hard for social media users like me to know when being tricked into sharing sensitive data. I need to reflect on the pervasive influence of social media on my life to ensure I balance its positive impacts without compromising my overall wellness.
