Cybersecurity when working from home during COVID-19: considering the human factors

The Social Science Aspect

The article looks at how people handle cybersecurity, using ideas from different fields like psychology, sociology, and cybersecurity itself. It wants to understand how people personally experience cybersecurity, so it talks to them and asks questions in a way that lets them share their thoughts. It also considers how big events like the COVID-19 pandemic might affect how people handle cybersecurity. By listening to people’s stories and using this special way of looking at things, the study hopes to learn a lot about cybersecurity. Overall, it’s all about understanding how people feel about and deal with cybersecurity in their lives.

The research questions

In the study, researchers put together interviews to dive deep into the experiences of people in the field of cybersecurity in the midst of the transition to remote work mainly because of the bigger problem at hand which was Covid-19. Regarding Vygotsky’s educational theory, the study sought to comprehend how employees were going to adapt to cybersecurity practices within this novel work environment. Employing interpretative phenomenological analysis also known as (IPA), the researchers aimed to uncover the unique experiences of participants, prioritizing an in-depth exploration of individual perspectives over generalized findings. This approach resonated with the study’s overarching goal of understanding the cultural intricacies of cybersecurity learning during the pandemic period. Also taking into account the relationship between perception and culture, these questions mainly focus upon the “how” aspect when it comes to learning. They’re not as similar as wondering about certain cybersecurity practices, which are more in line with the understanding of cybersecurity hygiene. The many concerns included; How did the participants experience the transition from the office to working from home? What does ‘effective cybersecurity behaviour’ mean for participants, especially when working from home?Did participants experience any threats or attacks, and how did they deal with them? What type of advice/information (if any) was given to them to work securely at home? How did participants interpret the advice, and how easy or difficult was it to implement?

Methods

The researchers used a method called interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to ucomprehend how individuals reacted to their experiences. This method involves  a very thurough investigation of interview texts, seeking key themes, and understanding how these themes are compatible enough. It’s like trying to understand a story by looking at the different perspectives of the characters. This approach helps researchers get an even more deeper understanding of what the participants really went through.
