The speaker, in my opinion, characterizes his professional path as a detour. The field didn’t really advance during his time; you were either in it or you weren’t. This serves as an excellent example, in my opinion, of an important career decision. I find that there is a stronger resonance with fully immersing oneself than with testing the waters. He continues by revealing that, despite being an accountant by trade, he became involved in IT work after a company asked for help with its networks. Though trained as an accountant, he was drawn more and more to information technology jobs. This choice to veer off course proves that you can explore new opportunities even if you’re an expert in one area. After making this mistake, he never looked back and went on to found Australia’s first national digital forensic practice. I think that many of us aspire to something similar, and the speaker’s journey ultimately led him to find a career he is passionate about.
