What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
Criminal justice relates to the laws and policies at play before, during, and after the act of a crime and cybercrime relates to any crime committed using a computer and or the internet. Many cybercrimes are traditional crimes that take place online such as: fraud, bullying, or embezzlement. Since technology plays a huge role when committing a crime, there are certainly some overlaps between the two. Some new cybercrimes include the distributed denial of service attack and unauthorized access to information. Criminal justice and cybercrime overlap because criminal justice describes these crimes and how the attackers are to be prosecuted according to the law. This is how criminal justice and cybercrime overlap each other. This overlap can relate to many different topics discussed in this class, but one of the most common attack would be phishing. This is a cybercrime that attempts to steal some ones personal information, such as bank numbers, by using malware. Phishing can come in many different forms, it can come from visiting a fake website or from clicking a link in your email. Once this happens, malware is loaded onto your computer and the attacker can steal any personal information that is stored on there. This is such a common attack because the attackers make it seem like the are real people through an email or they make a legitimate looking website to gain your trust.
