What is the CIA Triad?
The CIA Triad stands for confidentiality, integrity, and availability (Hashemi-Pour & Chai, 2023). Cybersecurity experts use these to help with their daily work. In this writing, the reader will learn about each of these important concepts and examples.
Confidentiality
Businesses need to make sure that sensitive information is only available to the people that are authorized. One example of this is an IT worker setting up different levels of authorization within a company. They do this by setting up the read, write, and execute privileges. Businesses also need to have strong passwords. This will prevent people from finding documents or other sensitive information in a company. It could also prevent attacks, such as ransomware (What is the CIA triad? 2023).
Integrity
This concept is about keeping information from changing. An example of this would be a school website with the correct teacher information. It could be harmful to the school system if a student were to hack into that. It would make seem like the school is not trustworthy. This is also an example of authentication, which is different from authorization. A cybersecurity expert authenticating information is just making sure that the information is accurate. Authorization, as discussed in the previous section, gives people access to certain information (Hashemi-Pour & Chai, 2023).
Availability
This concept is about making sure that information/data is “there” for people who need it. The last thing a business needs is for their information to disappear. That’s why it’s important to have backups. Businesses should also keep their servers safe. An example of this is a business losing data on a hard drive due to corruption, but it is also stored in the cloud (What is the CIA triad? 2023).
Conclusion
The CIA Triad is important for businesses to be successful. Unfortunately, there will always be bad actors, as well as natural events that will impact businesses. A business should be able to keep their information safe and accurate if these concepts are followed.
