The article discusses an understated aspect of the topic of cybersecurity, which is social cybersecurity. Social cybersecurity is the hacking of humans and society, where technology is used to influence and control them. It is an important topic because social cybersecurity has implications for the international political balance between superpowers, namely the United States and Russia. In some ways, this is an extension and evolution of the Cold War. A direct military conflict is undesirable for both nations, but technology has opened up a whole new avenue for the two nations to clash. The battle is now about using technology, such as social media, to break the other country’s influence and sow polarization from within. Russia is already well known for being quite active in running social cyberattacks. I imagine this will only increase since the conflict in Ukraine has exposed the cracks in the Russian military operation. The Ukrainian war has only strengthened the position of the United States military and other Western allies, making asymmetrical warfare against the U.S. only more appealing.
