Abraham Maslov’s theory states that all human needs are situated on a hierarchy. With the lower levels needing to be met before we move onto the higher levels. In the case of technology, we have our own hierarchy of levels that relate to each of our normal human needs. On the lowest level, the physiological tier, I think the technological side would be related to the ability to access internet at all. Some people around the world do not have access to clean water and food. It feels bad to relate something like that to internet access, but it is something that has become a necessity in our current age. Without having internet access, you are automatically at a disadvantage. On the next level, the safety needs tier, it can be related to the security of your devices and networks. Being able to feel safe while you browse the internet on public or private networks is essential. This allows for people to use the internet to its full potential without too much worry. To some, just knowing there are laws for their privacy as well as multiple security measures and professionals to help them gives them enough sense of security. The belonging and love needs can be found in technology as well. For some, technology can help with being able to find groups of people who think the same as them. This can help with their sense of belonging if they are unable to connect with the people around them. Others are able to stay connected with their significant other and family because of technology which fulfills this tier for them. The penultimate level is in the hierarchy is the need for self-esteem. Validation and attention from others through social media or other means is enough the satisfy this need. Being able to show people things you are proud of can either boost or lower your self-esteem. That makes this tier a very unstable one in my opinion if you let other people’s opinion of yourself effect you too much. The last level, the self-actualization level, could be related to the fact that technology can enable you to do almost anything you want. If your dream is to build a brand you could use the internet and social media to actualize this dream. With the endless possibilities and opportunities that technology can provide can also assist in peoples attempt at human self-actualization.
