This is my final internship reflective journal entry. I still have three more weeks of work with the company, and there is still much more I can learn. These past couple of weeks have been very informative and I have gained a lot of experience with various sides of the job. One of the biggest steps I’ve taken recently was going to an emergency dispatch at a branch. They were having a critical outage that could have forced them to close until it was fixed. I was sent onsite to work with one of our remote technicians who specialized in branch technology. We worked together to diagnose the issue and troubleshoot the problem. We also got help from someone on the networking team to help us reroute the correct cords to the correct switches. I was able to learn a lot about the different switches we had and how they worked with our new eagle eye system. I also got to witness a real world example of why cloud computing is becoming so popular nowadays.
The company also hired a new tier 2 engineer for the service desk. He is very experienced and he is easy to get along with. I’m glad he is not someone who is not too uptight and he is not very old either so he is relatable. He actually moved from the Newport news area which is not too far from Old Dominion. He also graduated from CNU so he gave me a couple of college tips.
Overall, I have recently familiarized myself with various forms of equipment tickets and assisted various departments doing so. I scheduled deliveries from vendors and helped set up new hardware and software systems for deployment. This hands-on experience with all the different forms of technology is something I was hoping to do during my internship.
For the last interview I chose someone who was actually the intern from last year who was actually hired by the company afterwards. He graduated from VCU with a degree in Information Systems, Andrew Somchanmavong.
Q: Do you feel that your degree prepared you for your role at Apple?
A: I would say yes for the base IT knowledge but working with Apple helped me gain more skills with troubleshooting and hands-on experience. These experiences are something that the books can’t replicate that well.
Q: What was your internship experience like?
A: It was good since it helped me develop my skills and learn how IT is incorporated within the company.
Q: What role are you looking for in the future?
A: Either something within networking, cybersecurity or maybe even data analytics.
