Cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance in more than one way. To understand the ways that this has affected the workplace first we need to take a look at deviance. The definition of deviance based on google is, “Deviance or the sociology of deviance explores the actions and/or behaviors that violate social norms across formally enacted rules as well as informal violations of social norms.” This in simpler terms means that the act of going against what is normal. For the workplace activities that have been normalized consist of gossiping, doing work, congregating in the break room, and even bringing in treats to the workspace. All of these activities could happen on any basis and it wouldn’t bring too much more attention than normal. Some are looked down on more than others like gossiping but it is still a regular thing. When you go and look at activities that break this norm it can be almost anything that isn’t normalized in the workspace. Examples of this consist of stealing data, inappropriate conversations, and misuse of company equipment. There are a lot more examples that could fall in the category but this small sample should be enough to get the point across. Cyber technology has a role in this because using technology has made it easier to sneak, send, save, or receive data. This data for example could be company files that a hacker is trying to get. Someone in the workplace could get the files much easier than a hacker could and then sell the hacker the data and profit the remaining money. Cyber technology has generated a lot of good globally and especially in the workplace. This just goes to show that not everything that is created for a good purpose will be used for good reasons.
