Study Habits
So far in the fall semester, I am doing well in my English composition class. I have maintained an A+ so far since we started in August. English has always been an easy subject for me as of my good writing techniques I use in my writing. On the other hand, chemistry and history are my weaknesses for this semester and I need to achieve more practice. Chemistry was challenging in high school but more advanced now that I’m in college as of now. History is my favorite subject, but for Ms. White’s class I just need to learn how to use my evidence and resources to complete all of my assignments. I have been going to the chemistry building to study with a group of friends and watching youtube videos to help with my chemical equations for extra evaluation to help with my exams.
Transition to college
I was already aware of how challenging college was going to be before I started classes in August. To this day, I’m still trying to get adjusted to college and how to keep track of all of the work I have to complete. My college is different from the people I am around. The people are actually really calm and collective. Attendance is a big difference when it comes to college since most times it’s graded depending on the class you’re taking. The football experience has surprised me this semester because the fans here are very passionate about the Old Dominion football team and do bizarre things when the team scores a touchdown. The environment is also an experience while being in college due to meeting new people on or off campus. My expectations about college have come to fruition as by being very challenging and not easy to manage at all. Since I stay on campus, having no assistance or guidance when it’s needed is very hard since I’m an adult and I have to learn how to figure things out on my own.
Major
Something I learned about the nursing major is that we are connected to so many other health sciences fields. We are connected to public health, nuclear medicine, and communication sciences and disorders. Although being in the nursing field contains a lot of work and dedication, I still want to proceed to work towards being a pediatric nurse. I can’t think of any other major or minor that I would be interested in learning about in the health sciences field.
Connecting to Campus
My biggest problem during this semester is to try to stay focused while studying. I am not fully focused when I study in my dorm room, especially when I have to do big projects. The cyber loft in the Webb center is most likely my favorite place to work on more progressed assignments. My advisor, Ms. Waye has been helpful this semester by advising me on what I need to do differently and work towards during the rest of my fall semester to help pass my classes. I have not attended any meeting for a club due to me not having any time to do so. During this semester, I just have been trying to focus on getting my work done, but maybe next semester in the spring I will try to get involved into a club or maybe even get a job to earn extra cash on the side.
Guest Speakers/Field Trips
Dr. Brown and Dr. Robertson-Jones visit was my favorite out of the guest speakers. I love how they talk about public health and can tie it to nursing. I also loved how they talked about ethnicity or where you come doesn’t matter when it comes to health related situations. In the nursing field, you have to communicate with your patient not depending on the environment they come from. I definitely would consider connecting with them again at the end of the semester to talk more about the public health major.
