From Verbeek’s Writing: Writeup

Verbeek mentions how technology is “active” and has now become integrated into everyday activities. No longer do humans have to look at their phones to be on social media, when a headset can provide real life social media, showing what the person in front of you does. As strange as it sounds- and no, this is not a Black Mirror episode-ICT has seeped into every part of human life. This leaves the question of what are the implications and to further that, how can ICT be regulated with its new developments? The line between society and ICTs becomes more of a grey area for one. Another implication is the disconnection between humans, as the presence of technology will reduce Prominet skills like listening and nonverbal communication. When observing any of these new inventions, consider the kind of embedding will they facilitate, put simply how will it affect us (pg226)? The focus should not be on how to appropriately apply the ICTs to society. The perspective developers and those who watch over the progress of technology should have been from a lens of mediating powers (pg.226). As innovations of ICT continue, it will be up to those who understand its societal impacts and footprint to regulate the intelligification of the material world.
