During this week’s reading monitor, I read about the role and impact of humans in Cyber Security. In, Why is Cyber Security About Human Behavior, the author discusses how cyber security can be considered a behavioral science. Human emotion and behavior play an integral part in one’s security online. Cyber threats are not only carried out through the use of technology, but things such as social engineering can also be considered a factor. A lot of cyber threats are not new, and have been around for decades. Though these threats may be more advanced from before, social engineering may play a bigger role in the execution.
In, The Impact of Human Behavior, humans are portrayed as a weakness in the world of ever-evolving technology. Humans are wired to be efficient. Shortcuts will be considered whenever completing a task. If the job gets done, then what harm is there to using shortcuts? This is quite a dangerous take when it comes to security of data, as it may leave a company and their clients or consumers at risk. Data can become overwhelming as well. That is why automation has helped us organize and manage large amounts of data in a shorter time.
With a limited budget, it is going to be nearly impossible to cover all of the flaws that humans and technology may bring to the company. However, that does not mean an organization can’t put things in place to minimize that risk. In regards to employees, adequate training is a must. Make them aware that sharing information across files can lead to data becoming exposed.
All of the technology within our company must be maintained and configured. Logs should be kept up to date just in case of an internal (and external) threat. This will help with tracking down those responsible for the event, and potentially prevent anyone within the company from committing such an act.
