“Erica Dean: Registered Nurse in the Making”
Erica Dean is currently employed as an LPN care coordinator at Drexel Hill Pediatrics, working with Merihelth. She holds a high school degree from Academy Park High School, completed some studies at Widener University, obtained her LPN certification from Bucks County Community College, and is currently pursuing an RN degree at Delaware County Community College. In addition to being CPR-certified, she holds a pediatric certification.
In the interview, Erica shared that her inspiration for entering the healthcare field came from her aunt, a nurse practitioner. Her journey to her current position involved working for an insurance company, dealing with pediatric shifts, and collaborating with agencies for coverage.
Her daily responsibilities include occasionally working from home, managing emails, handling medical necessity letters and authorizations, and ensuring adequate staffing for families. The most rewarding part of her job is securing staffing for families in need using nursing shortages.
Despite encountering challenges such as not being able to form personal connections with patients, Erica values the ability to make a difference in high-risk cases. She advises those entering the health field to have a plan, be adaptable to changes, recognize their worth, and pursue their passion rather than focusing solely on financial gains. Outside of nursing, Erica envisions owning her own restaurant.
