HMSV 346: Diversity Issues

Assignment 3: Gender

This short film is a reminder of how gender roles play a major role in the workplace. Rachel Balkovec worked twice as hard then some of her colleges and was still discriminated against. In this film Rachel touched on how you can be overlooked because others simply just don’t see the vision you do. She was a D1 softball catcher now turned Yankees hitting coach in the major league.

Rachel has provided a point of view that shows though she was fighting discrimination, she also had her reasons for reaching where she is now.  Her goal is to teach and guide these men to be and become the best they can be in all they do. What I found shocking is that after she changed her name on her resume, she began to receive more offers for the job. I think this was smart so that these teams can look past gender and see how highly qualified she is. This allowed her to get one foot in the door and set the example she has now set for other woman.

Although I feel this was a smart move and considered a win for woman in the workforce, it still does not solve the main problem here. It should not be possible to be overlooked every time because of gender when there is a law in place to prevent. This is a discussion that needs to be had in the corporate or working world in general. Through all these ups and downs trying to find a place in her career, she persevered.

Assignment 5: Wellness

Imagine yourself at the age of 50 still being able to have the same agility as a 30-year-old. Still being able to deal with adversities and processing emotions in a way to mange mental health. The same friends you had in your 20s are still the ones you talk to at this age. Growing with a lovely family that you built and groomed to become the amazing individuals they came to be. When I envision myself at 50, this is what I see for my future. For this to happen I understand that even decision I make her in my 20s is crucial to my future.

In order to keep my physical body intact I will need to be cautious of what I put in my body and motivate myself to continue being active. I also will continue to educate myself as the world changes so I can be more self-aware of myself and others. I believe that my morals and the spiritual life I have now will not waver, however, if it so happens to, I have my family to always reel me back in. With the career field I aim to be in I believe it will be my constant reminder to make my mental health a priority. This way I can be able to inspire in impact other I meet in my lifeline.

I know that it is all easier said then done. We are all human and sometimes life really will not turn out how you plan it. However, being proactive and intentional with what you do can always lead you to a better outcome. I am hoping that when I do reach 50, I can reflect back on this assignment and be fulfilled in what I had planned for myself.
