She is an Operating room (OR) nurse with a bachelor’s degree and is in the process of getting her Master’s in psychology. Uche got into her field of study because she is passionate about helping people and she even thought of nurses as angels in disguise.

Her journey to be where she is now was not easy. She finished her bachelor’s degree, got a couple of years of experience, then spent about 9 months in training to obtain an AORN certification so she could become an OR nurse. Her basic roles and responsibilities are to be a patient advocate, write up documentation, and help set up surgical rooms.

For Uche, putting smiles on her patient’s faces and making a difference without being rewarded is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. The most challenging part of her job was the process it took to get trained in a specialty like the OR and trying to balance work and family life.

Uche’s advice for some getting into the health care field is to make sure you are passionate about nursing because you can easily get burnt out. She also encouraged getting a solid foundation in nursing and trying specialties. One of the pieces of advice she emphasized was to focus and don’t get distracted.

One of the key takeaways from this interview was to try to specialize in a department. In the 6 years of her career, Uche has done many things. She has done medical-surgical nursing, telemetry nursing, psych nursing, travel nursing, and she even got a contract to work as an occupational health nurse for METRO. Specializing is a great way to try out and experience new things.

For this assignment, I had the pleasure of interviewing Uche Okoro.
