As information technology expands computer security is a growing concern. By practicing safe habits one can ensure their computer is secure. An incredibly significant habit to maintain a safe computer regards password privacy/security. Passwords should be complex to optimize security and prevent decoding. Additionally, passwords should never be shared or recorded in insecure places. Doing so could lead to unauthorized access that results in corrupted or stolen data. Another habit to guarantee that unwanted access is not granted involves maintaining up to date computer software. Antivirus software, anti-spyware software, and firewalls are types of software that protects from hackers.
Cybersecurity awareness helps to guide one’s interactions with information technology. By safely browsing on the internet via an up-to-date browser, protection is gained from malicious actors and activity. Safe browsing entails avoiding sites with forbidden content (forbidden refers to illegal or explicit content). Also, one must exercise caution when clicking on online ads or posts even though they may appear to be from a trusted source. Keeping a computer safe requires caution when utilizing email services. It is important to avoid clicking suspicious links or attachments, which unknowingly may contain malware. It may seem innocent to download the latest blockbuster movie, music album, or applications from less known parties, however doing so increases the risk of downloading unwanted malware.
By ensuring that trusted sources are utilized computer security is increased. Another way to ensure that one’s computer is safe is by only using personal USBs or other external devices that come from reliable sources. Usage of any device not known creates opportunities for infection by viruses and malware. Note, access protection also involves avoiding unsecure and unknown WI-FI networks. Accessing these types of networks can introduce spyware or ransomware from hackers. By sustaining simple proactive habits like the ones listed, one knows that their computer is safe.
