Journal Entry 2
The next 50 hours of working at ODU Online were all about learning how to properly manage and launch a class. At ODU online I was considered an online technician just as everyone else that trained me was considered. Each one of them had originally come from TV studios so they knew how all the audio and video equipment was properly connected and ran. I however had never really dubbed in the audio and visual side of technology. I was more heavily focused on the IT and hardware side of technology since I had grown up. Most of this was all new things for me to learn and I was very interested in it. Each new way the technicians trained me help get a better understanding of the technology at hand. For example, I had no idea how an audio board even worked before starting the job. They showed what each volume raiser and the knob would do so I could set the sound properly. This all helped towards my goal of learning new technology.
Each control room consisted of an audio board and video display to see what was in the classroom. They also all had a set of knobs and faders that needed to be turned in a certain way to not interfere with one another. They luckily have the majority of them labeled so it was not as hard to understand what each one did. They showed me also how to tune out audio with certain buttons if something was not coming through. Then they showed me how to use our Cisco and Creston panels. Each Cisco and Creston panel was connected to a room through a wired connection that ran to our control rooms. Each one had very similar setups but needed certain settings to set up the room before a teacher would enter there or remotely. I learned from that how to set up the classroom for online use.
After all of that, I had to learn how to use the Zoom and Webex app itself as a host. I rarely used any host functions but having this job let me learn what I really needed for host options and how to properly manage it. When using host options it showed me exactly how to fix technical issues with connection and different settings. Each setting also enabled me to learn the ins and outs of Zoom and Webex host roles.
