Service-Learning | Cleveland State Community College

In PAS 301: Ethics, Governance and Accountability in Public Service , I learned to :

  • Work with community members, community organizations, government agencies, or external constituencies to identify and address societal issues
  • Implement solutions to meet community needs.
  • Reflect on sense of civic identity

Reflection Activities

In this service learning course I was able to reflect on civic issues . In one discussion board assignment I was given the opportunity to have a discussion with my other classmates on governmental regulations. In this discussion the importance of accountability in government was brought up. Governmental accountability is an important topic because it is this accountability that helps evade issues like corruption. While laws exist that assign accountability to various branches of government, it is at the end of the day the civic duty of the people to vote for leaders they consider just, to participate through activities such as peaceful protest, etc. Citizens elect officials who they believe are accountable and will provide provisions for their civic issues such as the construction and repair of roads, disposal of garbage, provision of safe drinking water, etc.

I have applied concepts from your service learning experience in another context, specifically when it comes to my family. Through this course and it’s requirements I learned more about the importance of serving others, and not just yourself. When it comes to my husband and children, I try to always have the heart of a servant. I believe that as human beings our duty to serve our neighbors. Currently this concept is something that I am only using in my household with my immediate family members, but I eventually plan on trying to become more active in the community through participation in volunteer activities with organizations such as the Hampton Roads Food Bank, among others.
